Timeline

There's no fixed time requirement in Catholic tradition, and the funeral is typically scheduled within about a week of death, largely around parish and family availability. This is more flexible than some other traditions, which gives families more room to coordinate travel and scheduling with both the funeral home and the parish.

Key rites

• Vigil (wake): a time of visitation and prayer, often including a Scripture reading and the Rosary, usually held the evening before the funeral Mass.
• Funeral Mass: the central rite, typically held at the deceased's parish church, including Scripture readings, a homily, and the Eucharist.
• Rite of Committal: the graveside (or crematorium) service, including final prayers, typically brief.
• Catholic teaching permits both burial and cremation; if cremation is chosen, the Church asks that cremated remains be buried or entombed rather than scattered or kept at home, and that the remains ideally be present (not merely represented by a photo) at the funeral Mass where possible.

The National Funeral Directors Association's most recent published national medians (2023) were $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial and $6,280 for cremation: these are reasonable national reference points, though actual costs depend heavily on your funeral home, parish fees (which are separate from funeral home costs), and cemetery.
